Welcome to Axios Charlotte’s 2025 Home of the Year! Designed for the Williams Naylor family with Grandfather Homes, this 9,000 square foot retreat blends modern luxury with classic Southern warmth. We were honored to contribute to this custom project by providing Silvian Laakso-Valley and a custom FloorMade entryway, which grounds the home’s clean, organic aesthetic.

Creating a Custom, Dream Home

Over a five-year design process, homeowner Takila Williams Naylor worked closely with Grandfather Homes to shape a home that balances contemporary lines with subtle farmhouse influences. From architectural elements to material choices, every detail was selected to create a refined, welcoming space.

Central to the design was shaping the home to the family’s vision for how they would personally use the space as a family and hosting others.

“I wanted our home to be a space where we could entertain, where people can come here, feel like they’re at home, but we can still have a party and have fun,” recounted Williams Naylor in the Axios feature.

Curating Intentional Details and Spaces

Upon entering the home, guests are met with a herringbone entryway, handcrafted by our team at FloorMade. The statement flooring sets the tone for the home’s welcoming presence. To connect the main level, Williams Naylor chose Silvian Laakso-Valley to be installed throughout. The organic tones and texture unify the spaces and create an approachable atmosphere that balance the contemporary architecture.

The home is filled with custom spaces, like a small kitchen off the main one that Williams Naylor designed for her daughter to bake and create. She also included a large sleepover room with bunk beds and a stage, ready for her daughter to host her own guests.

The intentionality continues in the basement, with an entertainment-focused gathering space. A gaming area, movie theater, and additional lounge spaces give the family a place to host friends while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming. For Williams Naylor, the finished basement reflects exactly what she hoped the home would become.

“If you’re going out with friends, you can go out with them in my basement and have just as much fun,” Williams Naylor says in the Axios article.
