Inside This Hill Country Home Rooted in the Texas Landscape
Product: Vintage Loft – Distillery
Project: Mustard Architects, Charles Davis Smith (Photography)
Location: Fredericksburg, TX
Room: Living Room, Entryway, Kitchen, and Bedroom
Surrounded by Hill Country mountains and meadows, this Mustard Architects project in Fredericksburg, TX, was designed to blend in and mirror the striking landscape. By choosing the right architecture, finishes and palette, the team crafted a modern yet earthy retreat for homeowner Jill Elliott.
“The idea was, how do we take this house and create this refined modern house with texture and light that looks like it came from the ground.”

Designed to “Look Like it Came From The Ground”
From the start of the project, it was clear that the environment would inspire both the home’s exterior and interior. Built in northern Fredericksburg, the area provided inspiration from the red clay soil to the local Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, a popular pink-ish granite mountain. Even the placement of the home on the grounds was intentionally chosen to fit in with the surroundings.
“The idea was, how do we take this house and create this refined modern house with texture and light that looks like it came from the ground,” said Andrew Bray of Mustard Architects in the City Lifestyle feature (read more here).
To bring this vision to life, an emphasis was made to include large windows, earthy materials and the homeowner’s personal stylings. Every room gives a glimpse of the mountains, pool or meadow.
“Every room has little vistas,” Bray described to City Lifestyle.
Rammed Earth Walls Meet Real Wood Floors
One of the most striking features of the home is the rammed earth walls that echo the surrounding landscape. Created with compressed layers of soil, the material adds layered tones of gray, brown and soft pink.
“Use of the rammed earth walls was a key design element that we looked at because Jill wanted texture, and not just stone and metal, rather texture that was tied to the land,” said Bray.
Underfoot, Vintage Loft Distillery adds a dusty wood texture, bringing another organic element to the design. Throughout the main level, the flooring grounds the earthy palette and complements the granite and steel accents. Choosing a wide width with long lengths eliminates many seams, creating a flow from wall to wall.
Nature-Forward Design
Blending a home with the surrounding nature can spark creative designs and unique materials, like the rammed earth walls. Adding in a Real Wood Floor like Vintage Loft Distillery brings in another layer of nature, grounding the design and bringing the outside in. In this Fredericksburg project where the design was rooted “from the ground up”, these elements formed an organic oasis for the homeowners to live, gather and be inspired by.
