Like many things in life, design is cyclical. If you wait long enough, every trend comes back around again. While that means we get to see old favorites come back in new, modern ways, it also means we get to relive the past in all its former glory. From shag carpet to all-over-print rooms, join us as we look back over the past decade of design wins and losses to find out what we can expect for the future.

Color Your World
While the early 2000s were marked by bright neon and exuberant excess, 2010 kicked off a decade that embraced a more mature but funky palette. Millennial pink made its grand debut and ushered in the start of color minimalism. Soft whites and dove greys took the place of creamy beiges and earthy browns and additionally became the neutral palette of choice in many homes and trendy spaces. In 2016 Pantone named “Rose Quartz” as its color of the year and kicked off the trend of expecting a return to nature with moody blues and soothing greens inspired by the natural world.

Bye Bye Themes
Farmhouse chic, industrial warehouse and bohemian beach bungalow will need to reinvent themselves in the coming year. For this next decade, designers are leaning toward a less-is-more approach and changing the interpretation of what a themed room can be. Ditch the Edison bulbs, mason jars and buffalo check for something more abstract. Think simple lines, reclaimed wood floors for farm-to-table style. For mid-mod junkies, change it up! Throw in some eclectic pieces that span the decades and to break up the feeling of stepping back in time. If industrial loft is your aesthetic, soften the harsh lines with lush fabrics, lux furniture and organic accents. This time, it’s all about balance.

Be a Tastemaker & Define Your Brand
Why follow the trends, when you can set them? Start fresh by embracing your personal style and design your space so it speaks to you. While simple subway tile and minimal decor will always be in fashion, it’s time to strike out and embrace the eclectic. Let go of purist design and don’t be afraid to mix and match. From color and pattern, texture and lighting, now is the time to style your space with confidence. Thinking of repainting your home? Forgo a single accent wall and instead color the ceiling. Think funky wallpaper, unexpected luxury and materials used in unique ways.

Design for Social Good
One thing that will never go out of style is our dedication to doing good. This year take a moment to connect with your community and make a difference in someone’s life. Aside from financial contributions, donate your time, goods or services to one of these great causes. This decade, it’s up to you to focus on the bigger picture of giving back.

Embrace Eco Friendly
Be a little kinder to the planet and start by shopping small. With the rise of overnight shipping and same-day delivery, we forget that every purchase we make has an impact both globally and locally. Support your community by shopping small whenever possible. From handmade goods to building materials, you may be surprised at the quality and selection available in your own backyard. So, the next time you’re in the market to make a change, look to your local artisans for homegrown inspiration.

Step forward into the new decade with fresh ideas and grand designs. For of-the-moment ideas.
