Wood flooring can be finished in numerous different ways. Some finishes are burnished into the wood, some are natural oils that harden over time, some are a top coating that actually builds a film of protective finish over the wood and others chemically bond to the wood fibers to seal the wood from being able to absorb moisture, dirt, etc. To cover all these topics in depth I could write a full length book which is not the point of this blog. However I would like to touch on a few trends that are becoming more apparent in the industry that have to do with finishes.

Question. Can a random width floor be utilized in a modern or contemporary design theme? Random width floors today are likely to be lower grades of flooring including lot of character and natural variation in the look of the floor. Additionally, many of these floors are hand-scraped or hand-sculpted to provide a worn texture appearance that is more in line with rustic, country or French country elements. Here is the question. If a random width floor was made from higher grade material with more visual consistency of color, graining and texture AND if it was left as a smooth face product could it be utilized in modern and contemporary design themes.

Of course the best way to save your hardwood floors from water damage is to employ preventive measures. Try to avoid water and other liquid spills; if they occur clean them immediately using absorbent cloth or paper towels. Maintaining air humidity in the recommended range for your particular hardwood floor is also necessary to prevent warping and other moisture related damage.
